Murphy UFO Case
Bolton, England, United Kingdom
The Murphy UFO Case, unfolding near Winter Hill in Lancashire in late 1999, remains one of northern England’s most unsettling UFO encounters. Local farmer Ken Murphy reported a hovering craft and later faced official intimidation — a mystery deepened by investigators being shadowed by an unidentified man and a denied government warning.
History
In the quiet farmland below Winter Hill, near Belmont and Rivington, a series of extraordinary events during the winter of 1999–2000 gave rise to one of Lancashire’s strangest modern UFO cases. Known as the Murphy UFO Case, it involved a local farmer, Ken Murphy, whose peaceful rural life was upended by encounters that blended the aerial, the physical, and the deeply unsettling.
It began in late November 1999, when Murphy observed strange lights hovering silently above one of his fields. The lights, described as brilliant white and amber spheres, moved erratically, shifting direction against the wind before vanishing as if switched off. Over the next several nights, they returned — sometimes forming a triangular pattern, other times pulsating rhythmically above the moorland. Soon after, Murphy’s family began to notice electrical interference, power surges, and unexplained animal agitation, particularly among the sheep, which refused to graze near the fields where the lights had appeared.
One evening, after witnessing what he described as a “structured craft” hovering low above the trees, Murphy contacted the Manchester Aerial Phenomena Investigation Team (MAPIT) — a civilian research group specialising in UFO and aerial anomaly reports. MAPIT members visited the site within days, documenting burned grass, circular impressions in the soil, and elevated radiation readings consistent with a heat source or energy discharge.
However, the case took a darker turn soon after. According to MAPIT’s report, as their investigators departed the site, they realised they were being followed by an unidentified man driving a dark saloon car with no visible plates. The vehicle maintained pursuit along country lanes before disappearing near the A666 road. When MAPIT attempted to trace it, no registration or police record matched the description.
Meanwhile, Murphy himself was soon visited by an official claiming to represent the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAFF). The man allegedly warned him to stop talking about the incident, implying that further publicity could lead to “unwanted complications.” When pressed by reporters days later, MAFF formally denied ever having contacted Murphy or issuing any statement related to the case. The contradiction only deepened public suspicion, suggesting elements of surveillance or suppression more commonly associated with Cold War-era UFO cases.
Through December, the activity continued. Witnesses from nearby Belmont and Rivington villages also reported unidentified lights performing high-speed manoeuvres and shadowy figures moving along the moorland ridge. Murphy later claimed that on one occasion he saw a tall, humanoid silhouette standing at the edge of his property, motionless and watching, before it vanished as though absorbed into the darkness.
Local investigators linked the events to a series of electromagnetic anomalies and UFO sightings that have long clustered around Winter Hill — an area already associated with Dogman sightings, mysterious aircraft crashes, and strange plasma phenomena dating back decades. Sceptics have proposed explanations ranging from military exercises to atmospheric discharges caused by the hill’s unique geology, yet no official or scientific conclusion has ever been reached.
The Murphy UFO Case endures as one of the region’s most puzzling and chilling encounters — not merely for the lights in the sky, but for what followed on the ground: intimidation, denial, and the lingering sense that someone, or something, wanted the story buried.
