Kelvedon Hatch Nuclear Bunker

Brentwood, Essex, United Kingdom

Within the county of Essex stands a very ordinary looking bungalow, yet, underneath this property, is a complex, disused secret Cold War bunker which is now reportedly home to poltergeist activity and ghostly apparitions.

History

Kelvedon Hatch Nuclear Bunker was built in 1952, originally as an air defence station as part of the RAF ROTOR project. ROTOR was an air defence radar system created by the British government to defend against soviet bombers. Later, the bunker was recommissioned as a Regional Government Headquarters which had the ability to house hundreds of military and civilian personnel who, in the event of a nuclear attack, would be able to coordinate the survival of the population and continue government operations. In 1992, the threat of nuclear attack was low, so the bunker was sold as a cold war museum and location for paranormal investigations. At 125 feet below the ground, Kelvedon Hatch Nuclear Bunker is a disorientating maze of tunnels and military control rooms. At night, the eerie silence is reportedly broken by the unsettling sounds of unknown thumps, bangs, knocks and even growls. Ghostly apparitions and malevolent poltergeist activity has allegedly been witnessed here over the years. Could these hauntings be that of a construction worker who was said to have died within the bunker, or maybe they are the restless spirits of those who were laid to rest in the ancient burial mound which was disturbed by builders? Whoever or whatever they may be, Kelvedon Hatch Nuclear Bunker has to be one of the spookiest locations in Essex.
