New Inn Pub, 1 Prince Street, Bridlington
Bridlington, East Riding of Yorkshire, United Kingdom
Stephen The Prankster Poltergeist behind the bar.
History
Near to the sea front at Bridlington, East Yorkshire, and situated on the corner of Prince Street and Cross Street, is the New Inn pub. Upon entering the busy pub off the bustling road just up from the funfair, the thirsty visitor is welcomed by friendly faces behind the bar.
Upon asking "got any ghost stories?" the staff proffer an explanation as to why customers are safe, but not necessarily the staff.
"Well", said one barmaid rocking on her heels and contemplating a reply. "There is Stephen."
Wrongly assuming she meant another member of staff, when pressed for an explanation the barmaid added "Stephen. Oh he's our resident prankster."
"Right. So is he he now?"
"He only remains behind the bar, he doesn't play pranks on the customers. They find his shenanigans hilarious."
She glanced quickly behind her "No he's not here at the moment. Normally he waits until the evening.
"So what does he get up to?"
"Well, he usually flips the draught beer tap on - he's partial to a Guinness."
"Anything else?"
"Well he's been known to knock glasses off the shelf onto the floor behind the bar. Oh we've experienced small items like the spirits' measure cups fall on the floor and the lights flicker. Some years ago when smoking was allowed inside the ash trays were not allowed on the bar as he seemed to disapprove of smoking."
"But he's not here now."
"No. When the pub is busy. Try tonight."
Further down Prince Street is a newly restored and unveiled (August 2026) memorial plaque for a firefighter whose bravery during a bombing raid in World War Two was acknowledged by his being awarded a George Cross.
