Arbor Low Henge and Stone Circle

Arbor Low Henge and Stone Circle

Monyash, Derbyshire, United Kingdom

A Peak District henge enclosing fallen limestone stones, with a later burial mound added to its bank. The complex developed through successive episodes of prehistoric activity rather than a single building event.

History

Arbor Low occupies a prominent limestone ridge in the Peak District. Its substantial bank and internal ditch enclose the remains of a stone circle and a central stone setting known as a cove. Two opposing entrances provide routes into the enclosed space. A later round barrow cuts into the henge bank, demonstrating that burial activity followed the creation of the enclosure. Nearby Gib Hill forms another component of this prehistoric landscape. The order and dates of all the building phases remain uncertain: comparison with other monuments suggests activity extending across the late Neolithic and Bronze Age, rather than one construction event. More than fifty limestone slabs and fragments survive within the henge, mostly lying flat. The monument is therefore valuable as a record of changing ceremonial and funerary practices, while its exact rituals and the relationship between individual features remain open to interpretation.
