The Sandown Clown Sighting

Sandown, Isle of Wight, United Kingdom

In May 1973, two children exploring marshland near Sandown Airport reportedly encountered a seven-foot humanoid with a pointed yellow hat, triangular eyes and an unnaturally motionless face. Calling itself “All Colours Sam”, the mysterious figure invited them into a windowless metal hut, demonstrated bizarre abilities and claimed it was neither human nor entirely a ghost.

History

On a Tuesday afternoon in May 1973, two young children playing near Lake Common on the Isle of Wight allegedly encountered one of the most extraordinary unidentified entities ever described in British paranormal history. The witnesses were a seven-year-old girl, subsequently identified under the pseudonym Fay, and a boy of approximately the same age. Their experience began in marshland between the Shanklin and Sandown golf links and the small airfield near Sandown. While exploring the area, the children reportedly heard an unsettling wailing noise resembling an ambulance siren. Intrigued, they followed the sound across the open ground towards a wooden footbridge spanning a small stream. As they approached, the noise stopped. Suddenly, a blue-gloved hand appeared from beneath the bridge, followed by an enormous, strangely dressed figure. The creature reportedly stood almost seven feet tall, with a disproportionately large head resting directly upon its shoulders, apparently without a neck. Its face was unnaturally white, with triangular markings resembling eyes, a square brown nose and yellow lips that remained completely motionless. A pointed yellow hat sat upon its head, topped by a black knob and flanked by peculiar antenna-like projections. It wore a green tunic with a red collar, white trousers and blue gloves. Its limbs appeared strangely mechanical, with wooden-looking slats protruding from its clothing. Most disturbingly, the figure appeared to possess only three fingers on each hand and three toes on each foot. Its movements were equally unnatural. Rather than walking normally, the entity reportedly travelled in exaggerated, high-stepping hops, resembling a mechanical puppet or oversized bird. The children watched as it fumbled with a book, accidentally dropped it into the stream and clumsily retrieved it before disappearing into a nearby metallic hut. Shortly afterwards, the figure reappeared carrying what resembled a microphone connected to a long white cable. The terrifying wailing noise returned, prompting the children to retreat. However, the sound abruptly stopped, and a surprisingly friendly voice appeared to address them. The voice seemed extraordinarily close, even though the figure remained some distance away. Reassured, the children approached. The entity produced a notebook and wrote several words, apparently in the wrong order, before pointing to them individually. Together, the words formed its extraordinary introduction: “Hello and I am all colours, Sam.” What followed was a conversation unlike anything the children had previously experienced. When asked whether it was a human being, Sam reportedly laughed and answered no. When questioned about being a ghost, its response was equally peculiar: it suggested that it was, but only in an unusual sense. Asked what it actually was, the creature offered no meaningful explanation. It claimed that others like itself existed and indicated that it feared humans because they might harm it. Throughout the conversation, Sam's lips apparently remained motionless, despite the voice seemingly emerging from its direction. The encounter became even stranger when Sam invited the children inside its windowless metal hut. They reportedly entered through a small flap and discovered an unexpectedly elaborate interior. The structure appeared to contain two levels, with wooden furniture, an electric heater and blue-green walls decorated with patterns resembling instrument dials. Sam removed its pointed hat, revealing small, rounded white ears and sparse brown hair. During the visit, the entity claimed to survive on berries gathered from the surrounding countryside and water collected from the nearby stream. It then demonstrated a bizarre trick. Placing a berry inside its ear, Sam reportedly jerked its head forward, causing the berry to reappear near one of its eyes. Further movements apparently transferred it towards the creature's mouth. Whether this was sleight of hand, an unusual costume mechanism or something entirely different remains unknown. After approximately half an hour, the children departed, leaving the strange figure and its metallic dwelling behind. They reportedly told an adult they encountered on the golf course that they had seen a ghost, but their account was dismissed. Several weeks later, on 2 June 1973, Fay finally described the experience to her father, identified in subsequent reports only as Mr Y. Although initially sceptical, he reportedly questioned the boy separately and found similarities between their accounts. The story eventually reached UFO researcher Leonard G. Cramp and subsequently the British UFO Research Association. In January and February 1978, the BUFORA Journal published the case under the title Ghost or Spaceman '73?, introducing the wider public to the extraordinary entity now remembered as the Sandown Clown. The encounter has since attracted numerous interpretations. Some researchers consider Sam a possible extraterrestrial visitor, while others suggest an interdimensional entity, an elaborate disguise, a childhood fantasy or a misunderstood encounter with an eccentric individual. However, the case presents significant evidential difficulties. The children's identities were protected, no photographs of the entity are known to exist, and no independently verified physical evidence supports the alleged encounter. The precise location of the metallic hut has never been conclusively established, and the original account remains the principal source of information. Despite these limitations, the Sandown Clown occupies a unique position in British paranormal folklore. Unlike conventional ghost stories or UFO sightings, the incident describes an apparently intelligent, communicative being whose appearance, behaviour and claimed identity defy straightforward classification. A towering figure with the face of a puppet. A voice emerging from motionless lips. A windowless dwelling hidden beside an ordinary stream. And a creature that claimed to be neither human nor entirely a ghost. More than half a century later, the extraordinary question remains: What, if anything, did two children encounter in the marshes outside Sandown? Type of Phenomena: Unidentified Humanoid Entity, High Strangeness, Apparition, Possible Extraterrestrial or Interdimensional Encounter Haunting Classification: Other Reported Phenomena: Encounter with an approximately seven-foot-tall humanoid entity Unexplained siren-like wailing noises Unusual hopping or mechanical movements Triangular eye markings and motionless facial features Three-fingered hands and three-toed feet Speech apparently occurring without lip movement Introduction as “All Colours Sam” Claims of being neither human nor entirely a ghost Metallic, windowless, two-level hut near a stream Unusual apparent manipulation of berries through the creature's face Claims that other similar entities existed No independently verified physical trace of the encounter Paranormal Evidence Level: Historical Witness Account / Published BUFORA Investigation / No Photographic or Physical Evidence / Unverified
