Former Royal Salop Infirmary
History
Built in 1840, what was until 1977 the Royal Salop Infirmary is now The Parade Centre, full of interesting shops and a café, which overlooks the River Severn. The front of the building was used as a backdrop for the film A Christmas Carol, featuring George C. Scott.
One of the sightings inside is that of a mischievous matron, a poltergeist who throws things around at night. She has also been known to push over shop displays. Shopkeepers have reported the sound of hospital trolleys being moved on tiled floors above.
Above the shops are apartments, and there have been reports of moans and groans on quiet nights. The former mortuary has a reputation of a ‘presence’.
There is also the White Lady who resides where the operating theatre used to be; she is viewed as a ‘death watchman’, a harbinger indicating that someone is soon to pass over especially if she was seen sitting on the edge or end of an occupied bed.
