Maiden Castle Hillfort, Dorset

Winterborne St Martin, Dorset, United Kingdom

A Dorset hillfort built over a much older ceremonial landscape. Successive Iron Age ramparts enclosed a substantial settlement, while excavation exposed Neolithic earthworks and a cemetery with evidence of violence.

History

Maiden Castle occupies a hilltop near Dorchester with a history extending well before its Iron Age defences. Neolithic communities built a causewayed enclosure and a very long bank barrow, and Bronze Age burial mounds followed. The first hillfort occupied the eastern end; later enlargement extended the ramparts westwards and created increasingly elaborate entrances. Within the enclosure, roundhouses, workshops and storage buildings formed a substantial settlement. Mortimer and Tessa Wheeler’s excavations in the 1930s exposed graves near the eastern gateway, some containing people who had suffered violent injuries. Wheeler interpreted these as victims of a Roman assault, but later research has questioned a simple single-battle explanation. The hillfort declined before Dorchester became the principal Roman town nearby. Its great surviving banks thus overlie earlier monuments and contain evidence of settlement, burial and changing authority rather than one uninterrupted military history.
