The village's historical roots, particularly its numerous ancient chapels and proximity to prehistoric sites, are often cited as contributors to its reputation as a location with frequent supernatural occurrences. One of the more prominent reports of paranormal activity in Newtown centers around the ruins of St. Mary's Chapel. Locals have described encountering ethereal figures, often dressed in what appears to be monastic attire, particularly during dusk and dawn. These sightings are frequently accompanied by a distinct drop in temperature, even on warm days, and the faint, melancholic sound of chanting. The chapel's graveyard is also a focal point for reports of unexplained lights and disembodied voices, leading some investigators to conclude that the area exhibits significant residual haunting. Further compounding this, there have been occasional reports of poltergeist-like activity within nearby residential properties, including objects moving on their own and unexplained sounds of scratching or knocking from within walls, contributing to the "haunted Newtown" narrative.
