One recurring theme involves spectral sightings, particularly in and around Prestwich Clough and the grounds of St Mary's Church. Witnesses have described apparitions in period clothing, often seen fleetingly before vanishing. The churchyard, with its ancient gravestones, is a common locus for these observations, with some claiming to have heard disembodied voices or felt unexplained cold spots, indicative of haunted Prestwich areas. The former Prestwich Asylum, now a residential development, has also been a focal point for reports of residual hauntings, where echoes of its past as a mental institution are said to manifest as unsettling feelings or fleeting shadows. These include unexplained footsteps heard in empty corridors, whispers in uninhabited rooms, and the inexplicable sounds of objects moving when no one is present. Specific locations, such as some of the older public houses in Prestwich, have accumulated their own lore, with staff and patrons recounting encounters with poltergeist-like activity, such as glasses moving on their own or doors opening and closing without human intervention. Furthermore, a small number of accounts describe minor psychokinetic events, primarily involving small objects. The variety of paranormal phenomena Prestwich has yielded ranges from classic ghost sightings to more subtle, environmental anomalies.
