The ancient woodland, characterized by its dense canopy and isolated nature, has been the subject of numerous local accounts and investigations concerning its alleged haunted status. Reports of unusual occurrences date back to at least the mid-20th century, with a noticeable increase in interest during the late 1990s and early 2000s, solidifying its place in discussions of paranormal activity in Hales Wood.
