The area's industrial past, particularly its connections to shipbuilding and coal mining, is often cited by paranormal investigators as a potential source for these unexplained phenomena. Many accounts relate to former residential areas and public houses, such as the now-demolished Prince of Wales pub, which was a frequent site of alleged ghostly manifestations.
