These reports often center around Penninghame House, the estate's stately home, and the surrounding grounds, including ancient woodlands and former church sites. One recurring theme in Penninghame's paranormal lore involves phantom figures. Numerous individuals have reported sightings of apparitions, particularly within the vicinity of Penninghame House. These include a "Grey Lady," a common figure in Scottish folklore, believed to be the spirit of a former resident or governess. Eyewitnesses describe her as a translucent figure, often seen gliding through corridors or appearing in windows, particularly during twilight hours. These can range from disembodied footsteps on empty staircases, distant whispers where no one is present, to the sound of children's laughter emanating from unoccupied rooms. Staff and residents have occasionally reported furniture moving independently or objects being displaced without human interaction, phenomena often attributed to poltergeist activity. Further reports extend beyond visible apparitions and auditory events. Some individuals visiting Penninghame have described sudden, inexplicable drops in temperature, even in otherwise warm rooms, accompanied by a feeling of being watched. Others have reported a distinct smell of pipe tobacco or old perfume in areas where no such scents were recently present.
