Giant's Ring, Ballynahatty
Dunmurry, County Antrim, United Kingdom
A large Neolithic henge near Belfast enclosing the exposed stone chamber of a prehistoric tomb. Its great circular earthwork and central monument are distinct surviving elements of the same archaeological setting.
History
The Giant’s Ring at Ballynahatty, near Belfast, is a Neolithic enclosure built around 2700 BC. Its circular earthwork measures roughly two hundred metres across, creating a monumental boundary around a broad interior. Near the centre stands the exposed framework of a chambered tomb, consisting of upright stones and a large capstone. The tomb was originally covered by a mound of stone and earth, so the bare chamber visible today is only part of its former appearance. The enclosing bank and the central burial monument should be understood as separate architectural components rather than a single giant grave. Their association makes the site an important example of a prehistoric ceremonial landscape, while the precise activities carried out within the enclosure remain unknown. Its traditional name belongs to later attempts to explain an unusually large monument and does not establish its builders’ identity or beliefs.
