Aghanaglack Dual Court Tomb

Aghanaglack Dual Court Tomb

Enniskillen, County Fermanagh, United Kingdom

A Fermanagh burial monument with two chambered galleries arranged back to back. Excavation recovered burnt human remains, Neolithic pottery and later arrowheads, demonstrating more than one phase of prehistoric activity.

History

Aghanaglack occupies a south-east-facing slope in County Fermanagh, now within woodland but formerly part of a farm landscape. The monument contains two burial galleries sharing a rear stone, each divided into two chambers. Their courts differ in form: the south-western court uses large limestone blocks, while the north-eastern court is a smaller half-oval arrangement. Oliver Davies excavated in 1938 after stone removal and agricultural alterations had already damaged the structure. Finds included burnt bones of children and young people, animal remains, Neolithic pottery, flint objects and a bead. Barbed-and-tanged arrowheads indicate activity during the Bronze Age, later than the monument’s original construction. The surviving architecture and excavation results therefore record a developing funerary place. They do not identify named occupants or establish the precise ceremonies associated with either court.
