Tŵr Bach (Small Tower) lighthouse on Ynys Llanddwyn (Llanddwyn Island), Newborough

Beyond St. Peter's Church, Newborough and through the Corsican pine trees (planted in 1947 to help stabilize the shifting sand dunes) of Newborough Forest the visitor comes to arcing Newborough Beach, one of the finest and largest dune systems of the U.K. In 1955 the area was designated as Wales' first coastal natural Nature Reserve. The beach was used as a backdrop in the HBO series 'House of Dragon.' Moving to the right of the beach the visitor arrives at the tidal island on Ynys Llanddwyn (Llanddwyn Island). The cross and cylindrical lighthouse of Tŵr Bach (Small Tower), rumoured to be haunted by the ghost of a former lighthouse keeper who died while on duty on the island and remained devoted to his post even after death. Spectral reports include shadowy figures near to the tower, the sound of footsteps on the stone stairs to the entrance, disembodied voices, and sighs or quiet murmurs near to it. There are reports of visitors 'feeling watched' near the lighthouse. Is there the presence of a watchful guardian, remaining at his post, keeping a watchful eye on the seafarers passing by? The "island" is in fact a tidal island, and also contains the remains of an old church, a "Celtic" cross nearby, a boathouse and the associated old pilots' cottages, as well as the farther, smaller lighthouse near to the boathouse. A large stone cross has also been erected with the name Dwynwen carved on it. Dwynwen is celebrated on 25 January each year. She was the heartbroken Welsh patron saint of lovers and the day is celebrated across Wales as the equivalent of Valentines' Day. Some claim her spirit continues in the liverwort and golden hair lichen that clings to the tidal island’s rocks. The film Half Light (Demi Moore) was filmed on the tidal island.
