New Smithy, a hamlet within the civil parish of Chinley, Buxworth and Brownside in Derbyshire, England, has been the site of numerous reports concerning paranormal phenomena and unexplained events. The area's history, spanning centuries, includes accounts of spectral apparitions and other unusual occurrences, contributing to its reputation for paranormal activity in New Smithy. Residents and visitors have documented various encounters, ranging from auditory disturbances to visual manifestations, often linked to the hamlet's older structures and historical pathways. Among the more frequently cited phenomena are sightings of a spectral figure believed to be a former resident or worker, often reported near the former mill sites and along the banks of the Black Brook. These sightings typically describe a translucent, shadowy form, sometimes accompanied by a sudden drop in temperature or a feeling of unease. Disembodied voices and footsteps have also been noted, particularly in older cottages and along less-frequented paths, leading some to investigate the possibility of residual haunting. Accounts from the late 19th and early 20th centuries documented unexplained phenomena in New Smithy, including objects moving on their own and lights flickering without discernible cause, events often attributed by locals to preternatural forces. Further reports detailing haunted New Smithy have emerged from the area around the former railway lines and tunnels, which once served industry in the region. Witnesses have spoken of strange glows, often described as orb-like or ethereal mist, moving through these desolate areas late at night. There have also been sporadic reports of phantom railway noises, such as the distant chugging of a train or a whistle, despite the cessation of active rail traffic decades ago. These acoustic disturbances are often heard by multiple independent witnesses, adding to the intrigue surrounding the hamlet's paranormal landscape. Local folklore and historical records sometimes allude to specific tragic events or historical figures whose spirits might be tied to New Smithy. While conclusive evidence remains elusive, the persistence of these reported incidents contributes to the hamlet's status as a location of interest for those investigating paranormal activity. The anecdotal nature of most claims means they are often reinterpreted through personal experience and local legend, yet they continue to shape the perception of New Smithy as a place where the veil between worlds may occasionally thin.
