Capel Garmon Chambered Tomb

Capel Garmon is a Neolithic chambered tomb near Betws-y-Coed. A passage approximately five metres long leads to three burial chambers, with a large capstone surviving above the western chamber. The architecture belongs to the Cotswold-Severn tradition, making the monument an unusual northern example of a form better known farther south and east. Stones marking the outline indicate the position of a former mound approximately thirty metres long. These markers should not be interpreted as a separate prehistoric stone circle. The exposed chambers were originally internal parts of a larger burial monument, so the surviving layout differs from its complete ancient appearance. Architectural comparison places Capel Garmon within a wider funerary tradition, but does not identify its builders or occupants. Its value lies in the surviving chamber arrangement and the evidence it provides for the geographical spread of Neolithic burial forms.
