Bodowyr Chambered Tomb
Llangaffo, Gwynedd, United Kingdom
A small Anglesey tomb with a distinctive mushroom-shaped capstone. Its original mound has disappeared, and the absence of excavation leaves its contents and precise architectural classification uncertain.
History
Bodowyr stands on Anglesey as an exposed group of burial-chamber stones. Its broad, mushroom-shaped capstone originally rested on four tall supports; one of those uprights has fallen. A shorter fifth stone may have marked the entrance. The chamber was formerly covered by a mound of earth, so the open structure visible today represents only part of the original monument. Cadw considers it most likely to have been a Neolithic passage grave, but notes that the tomb has never been excavated. Its exact plan, contents and chronological sequence therefore remain uncertain. Communal burial is an interpretation based on the wider monument tradition, rather than a conclusion demonstrated by recovered remains from Bodowyr itself. The surviving capstone and uprights provide strong architectural evidence while leaving important questions about its use unanswered.
Period: Neolithic attribution; precise date unconfirmed
