Robin Hood's Butts, Stoupe Brow

Ravenscar, North Yorkshire, United Kingdom

Three round barrows arranged in a triangle above the coast. Greenwell’s investigations in the 1890s recovered cremation burials and grave goods, leaving hollows in the surviving mounds.

History

Robin Hood’s Butts occupies the crest of Stoupe Brow at the north-eastern edge of Howdale Moor. Three earth-and-stone barrows stand in a triangular arrangement, up to approximately one hundred and ten metres apart. Their mounds measure seventeen to eighteen metres across and survive to heights below one metre. Each was surrounded by a ditch, now filled and no longer visible as an open earthwork. Canon William Greenwell partially excavated all three in the 1890s, finding cremation burials and associated grave goods. His work left central hollows that remain part of their present appearance. The monument belongs to a wider prehistoric landscape of agriculture, burial and carved rocks. Its traditional name provides a later association with Robin Hood, but does not identify the builders or establish a connection between the burials and a historical outlaw.
