Flockrake Noddle Round Barrow

Flockrake Noddle Round Barrow

Hackness, North Yorkshire, United Kingdom

An earth-and-stone barrow overlooking the eastern edge of the Hackness Hills. A central hollow records partial excavation, while its surrounding ditch survives beneath the surface.

History

The Flockrake Noddle barrow stands in a prominent position near the eastern scarp edge of the Hackness Hills, south-south-west of Silpho Brow Farm. Its earth-and-stone mound measures approximately thirteen metres across and reaches one metre in height. A slight central hollow records partial excavation, but the protected-site description does not identify the excavator or provide an account of recovered burials. The original surrounding ditch, up to two metres wide, gradually filled as soil slipped from the mound and is now buried. Historic England places the monument within a former group of at least twelve burial sites across south-eastern Suffield Moor. Its remaining mound and sealed ground preserve evidence for construction and earlier land use, while the wider group shows that this part of the moor served as a substantial prehistoric funerary landscape.
