Round Barrow North of Lilla Cross

Goathland, North Yorkshire, United Kingdom

A low burial mound thirty metres north of Lilla Cross, separated from it by the Saltersgate track. This scheduled barrow is a distinct feature from the cross and its associated traditions.

History

A low round barrow survives on Fylingdales Moor about thirty metres north of Lilla Cross. The track now known as Saltersgate separates the mound from the cross, making them distinct surviving features in the landscape. Built from earth and medium-sized stones, the barrow measures approximately thirteen metres in diameter and stands half a metre high. Historic England records no visible surrounding ditch or stone kerb. Its classification places it within the prehistoric round-barrow tradition, but the designation does not provide an individual excavation sequence or a securely dated burial assemblage. The proximity of a later cross cannot establish the identity of anyone buried beneath this separate mound. Its protected fabric remains valuable for evidence of funerary construction and the ground sealed below the barrow.
