Lady Grace's Ride Round Barrow

Scalby, North Yorkshire, United Kingdom

An earth-and-stone burial mound beside Lady Grace’s Ride on Row Brow. Its height varies with the slope, and its surrounding ditch survives beneath the ground rather than as an open earthwork.

History

This round barrow stands on Row Brow, the scarp edge of the Irton and Seamer Moors near Scarborough. Its mound was built from earth and stone and measures approximately twenty-six metres in diameter. Because it occupies a break in the hillside, it rises about two metres on the western side and three and a half metres on the eastern side. A ditch around the mound supplied building material, but gradual infilling has hidden it below the modern ground surface. Historic England records no known excavation of the barrow. Its individual burial contents and exact construction date consequently remain unconfirmed. The monument belongs to a wider group of prehistoric mounds on the moor, providing evidence of a funerary landscape whose surviving earthworks preserve both ancient construction and the ground sealed beneath it.
