The Three Tremblers Round Barrows

The Three Tremblers Round Barrows

Sawdon, North Yorkshire, United Kingdom

Three adjacent burial mounds in Wykeham Forest, each disturbed by earlier excavation. The largest contained a stone-lined burial compartment, and two mounds originally had supporting kerbs of stones.

History

The Three Tremblers form a line of three round barrows near the northern edge of the Tabular Hills. Their earthen mounds vary in size, with the largest approximately thirty metres across and 2.7 metres high. All three contain central hollows left by partial excavation. The north-western and south-eastern mounds originally had kerbs of stones supporting and defining their edges, although many stones have since disappeared or become buried beneath slipping soil. Nineteenth-century investigation of the south-eastern barrow revealed a cist, a stone-slab compartment enclosing a burial. This provides direct funerary evidence for the group. The barrows stand within a dense prehistoric landscape containing other burial monuments, settlements and land divisions. Their surviving form records both ancient construction and later investigation, while remaining deposits may retain details absent from the earlier excavation accounts.
