Din Dryfol Chambered Tomb
Bethel, Gwynedd, United Kingdom
An Anglesey burial complex extending along a narrow rocky ridge. Surviving chambers and entrance stones indicate several phases of construction, with the eastern end representing a later addition.
History
Din Dryfol is a Neolithic burial monument built along a narrow rocky ridge on Anglesey. Its remains represent successive construction rather than one chamber erected in a single operation. Cadw identifies evidence for as many as four chambers within the elongated complex. At the western end, upright stones and a capstone approximately three metres by one and a half metres mark the earliest surviving part. Additional construction extended the monument eastwards, where a tall portal stone belongs to the latest chamber. This sequence demonstrates the enlargement of a burial place over time. The surviving stones reveal differences in architecture, but they do not establish the identities of the people commemorated or the exact ceremonies performed. The site is best understood as the remains of a developing funerary complex whose full covering mound and original appearance have not survived.
