Trefignath Chambered Tomb Complex

Trefignath Chambered Tomb Complex

Trearddur, Gwynedd, United Kingdom

A three-phase burial complex near Holyhead. Its western, central and eastern tombs were built successively, preserving evidence of an expanding monument used over a substantial period of prehistory.

History

Trefignath near Holyhead contains three Neolithic tombs constructed in succession. The earliest lies at the western end, where a box-like chamber was associated with a cairn of boulders. A second chamber was added farther east but has largely collapsed. The final eastern tomb retains tall entrance stones and capstones, giving the clearest impression of the complex’s surviving architecture. Excavation suggests that the monument may have been used over as much as fifteen hundred years. This long sequence shows that the site developed through repeated building and funerary activity, rather than representing one burial event. Differences between the chambers provide evidence for changing construction choices over time. The three structures are recorded here as one connected archaeological complex, preserving their relationship while avoiding separate map entries that would obscure the monument’s successive development.
