Barclodiad y Gawres Chambered Tomb

Llanfaelog, Gwynedd, United Kingdom

A coastal Anglesey chambered tomb containing carved stones with spirals and zigzags. Its surviving prehistoric passage and chamber lie beneath a reconstructed mound, making conservation part of its visible history.

History

Barclodiad y Gawres is a Neolithic burial monument on the coast of Anglesey. A passage approximately seven metres long leads into a chamber with a cross-shaped plan. Its most distinctive surviving features are carved stones decorated with zigzags and spirals. Comparable designs occur in prehistoric tombs in Ireland, placing the monument within a wider tradition of passage-tomb art around the Irish Sea. Their precise meaning remains unknown, and the carvings should not be treated as a deciphered account of the builders’ beliefs. The large mound visible above the chamber is a modern reconstruction, rather than an untouched prehistoric earthwork. This distinction matters when interpreting the site: ancient architecture and carved surfaces survive within a conserved presentation of the original tomb. Its name translates as the giantess’s apronful, a later descriptive tradition rather than evidence that giants constructed the monument.
